A WORKING MODEL
The Non-Profit Housing Corporation of Greater Houston was formed in 1968 as a 501(c)(3) Texas non-profit corporation dedicated to improving housing conditions and conserving neighborhoods.
At that time, Houston’s Housing Advisory Committee, appointed by the Mayor and led by our founding chairman, Jackson C. Hinds, initiated a relationship with the national Model Cities program which led to the enactment of a minimum standards housing code for Houston. Because of this program, Houston qualified for hundreds of millions of federal dollars for community improvements, including affordable housing opportunities.
Our organization continues to act as a catalyst between private and public sectors to improve housing in the Houston area. Today we work closely with the City of Houston, Harris County, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, business leaders, and elected officials to keep affordable housing a top priority in the Greater Houston Area.
